Honouring History, Building Future Leaders

The Social Justice Advocates (SJA) Youth Group is embarking on an extraordinary journey—one that pays tribute to Australia’s history while fostering resilience, teamwork, and leadership in young people. This year, a dedicated group of young individuals from the Bega Valley will take on the legendary Kokoda Track in Papua New Guinea.

This immersive experience aims to instill an appreciation of the sacrifices made by Australian soldiers during World War II, while also empowering participants with life-changing skills in endurance, leadership, and collaboration.

Why the Kokoda Trail?

The Kokoda Trail is more than just a physically demanding trek; it represents courage, perseverance, and the unwavering spirit of those who walked it before. The youth group will be retracing the steps of Australian soldiers who fought in the grueling 1942 Kokoda Campaign, gaining firsthand insight into the resilience and sacrifice that shaped Australia’s history. Through this experience, participants will develop a deep understanding of leadership under pressure and the power of unity in overcoming obstacles.

The Impact on Youth Development

This project is designed to be a transformative experience for young participants. By taking on the physical and mental challenges of the trek, the youth will develop:

  • Leadership Skills – Decision-making, problem-solving, and teamwork in high-pressure environments.

  • Resilience & Perseverance – Overcoming physical and emotional challenges while pushing personal limits.

  • Cultural Awareness – Engaging with the local communities of Papua New Guinea and learning about their history and traditions.

  • Community Engagement – Using the lessons learned to inspire other young people and contribute to local projects upon their return.

Funding the Journey: How You Can Help

A journey of this scale requires significant logistical planning and financial support. The SJA Youth Group is actively seeking funding, sponsorships, and donations to cover travel, gear, training, and essential supplies for the trek. Through grant applications and community-driven fundraising efforts, we aim to make this experience accessible to all participating youth, regardless of their financial background.

We believe that investing in youth development today creates stronger, more engaged leaders for tomorrow. Your support can help shape a new generation of resilient, community-minded individuals.
