Bringing Art to Life: The Tura Beach Library Mural Project
The Outline.
Bush & Us is a vibrant youth and community engagement initiative situated in the heart of the Bega Valley. We offer various avenues for involvement:
-
Alternative Education: We employ project-based learning methods, such as the SJA subgroups at local high schools, to provide engaging and unconventional educational experiences.
-
Supporting Local Creatives: We champion local artists and creatives while actively involving young people in community spaces. For instance, the Bush & Us Tura Library Mural project serves as a testament to our commitment to fostering artistic expression.
-
Bush & Us Workshops: Our workshops, like the Nature Journaling Group, offer hands-on experiences that connect participants with nature and foster a deeper appreciation for the environment.
Nature Journaling Groups
A monthly event hosted by Bush & Us, the Nature Journaling Groups provide a free space for young people, their families, and friends to come together for a scenic walk, followed by a creative session. Art materials are provided to participants, though bringing your own is also welcome.

The Nature Journaling Group was created to offer a shared space for reconnecting with the environment and engaging with others in a creative and fun way. In our fast-paced modern world, it can be challenging to find time to unwind and appreciate the healing energy of nature. However, when we do, we are reminded of how restorative and calming it can be for our mental and physical health.

Nature Journaling Groups
Nestled in the outdoor courtyard area of the Tura Beach Library, our Bush & Us Mural Project has come to life in a vibrant display! This mural celebrates the local flora and fauna native to the Tura Beach area. Designed by local Indigenous artist Lucinda Thurston, this eye-catching mural was painted over several weeks in collaboration with other local artists, young people, and friends. As the Project Coordinator, I have been absolutely thrilled to see this vision progress over time, resulting in an engaging and vivacious art piece for many to enjoy.

We have had fantastic conversations with library goers who expressed their delight and enthusiasm at seeing a previously unused corner come to life. Watching the transformation of a dull grey wall into a massive 7-meter-long mural was nothing short of phenomenal!

Below are some progress pictures taken during the painting process. It was fabulous working with the staff from Tura Marrang Library, who provided our painting team with lots of encouragement along the way. Bush & Us is so grateful to have had this opportunity to collaborate with a wonderful community space and create art that will be loved and appreciated for many years to come!
